Minimalover (2012)

There are things in life that taste best when done in a free way: love, faith and… jazz. Surely  music is an art where restraint and control are indispensable to success. But in jazz more is needed since at its heart lies trance, rhythm and abandonment of what is routine and predictable. Few musicians in Poland understood this truth as deep as Jerzy Mazzoll. And from the beginning of his career because  he was a protagonist of ‘yass’ movement and laid foundations for development of avant-garde jazz in Poland. In those times he created a band Arhythmic Perfection with which he explored the boundaries of improvisation not only in music but also in other arts.

Since then he consistently moved along ‘road less traveled’ in 90ties meeting with Derek Bailey and participating in his famous Company Week Festival. Tony Oxley became producer of his then released ‘Perplex’ album. After that he collaborated with Django Bates Orchestra and Peter Brotzmann. He also started a project called Diffusion Ensemble which eventually led to recording of series of albums. Well-remembered are also workshops he did together with Peter Kowald and Olga Szwajgier which influenced whole generation of young musicians.  He was as well the moving force in creating Art Depot festival which gave Polish and international audience unique opportunity to explore nature of improvisation in cultures different than European or American. He released altogether 12 albums which arguably changed the face of Polish free music and is now working on film and theatre projects made under auspices of Bogusław Schaeffer. Jerzy Mazzoll proved to be one the most unconventional individualities in Polish music and with this new project, recorded with young generation Janicki brothers, he shows consistency in ‘searching for a new land” in jazz.
