Slawek Jaskulke Trio feat. Maciej Sikala

Maciej Sikała - tenor sax (3-5)

Live Gdynia Summer Jazz Days 2001 (2002)

Sławek Jaskułke is a unique voice among our young pianists. Unlike most of them he does not follow Bill Evans cool jazz tradition but rather goes by path previously taken by Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly or McCoy Tyner. His style is percussive, energetic, even ecstatic. He attacks line with frenzy causing notes to dance, spinning them around, juxtaposing them in wildest configurations.

This disc is debut but it is awesome! Unlike many debutantes he is not only full of self-assurance but also he has clear, coherent artistic vision. His charsima transcends so well known mainstream jazz into something explosive, fresh, reinvigorating.

I cannot stress more role of Jaskułke overpowering personality since musicians who accompany him on this disc, although first rank, do not usually rock and roll that strong. Perhaps with exception of drummer Tomek Sowiński who is himself major force on Tri-City scene, with strong personality as well, having powerful projects behind him like for example "Synergy" (2010) with his Collective Improvisation Group.

But remaining two, that is saxophonist Maciej Sikała and double bassist Piotr Lemańczyk, altough great musicians and leaders of many and significant projects on their own, keep rather to calm side of jazz. Here they show astounding ability to attack, to charge with full speed, to storm audience with vitality and expression that I can only simply admire. Excellent jazz!
