Wojtek w Czechosłowacji (2011)
On the borderline of kitsch, sometimes even crossing it, superbly played, typically self-conscious, auto-ironic, overtly hipster, this CD by Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet leaves me sad... I admire his style, he is unparalleled in his ability to communicate with audience, being one of few jazz musicians who is part of mass culture in Poland, but if he continues on that road it will be rather disappointing to me. Yes, it's well played, yes, it's pure pleasure to watch and listen to it, yes, it will be even more so during concerts. But... but it's so superficial. It's like car accident in traffic jam caused by some minor distraction, phone call, bird flying or too short skirt of some attractive girl in the Spring. Certainly it caused some emotions but first of all it's nuisance. It all happened in low speed so no real danger was involved. All potential loss, dented bumper or scratched paint, though annoying, will eventually be covered by insurance company. Nothing real, simply a fad, an eccentricity, a crank, something of no substance, no importance, no flesh.
