For decades, drummers' albums were known for demonstrations of techniques and high-energy acrobatics (Billy Cobham's numerous solo works are one example). A New Millennium changed the rules radically – from now on, some highly creative drummers became the genre’s leaders, working as composers, leading high-capacity, larger creative combos and playing complex, pre-composed music (from John Hollenbeck to Tyshawn Sorrey). Maciej Gołyźniak is a different sort of drummer, though.
Maciej's third album as leader, “Damion”, opens with a very Chopin-like piano solo, melancholic and sensitive. Maciej leads a classic trio with pianist/keyboardist Łukasz Damrych and bassist Tomasz Pierzchniak; both are excellent companions for his project.
On seven trio originals, musicians play relaxed, tuneful chamber jazz, influenced by contemporary popular concert-hall instrumental music and fashionable acoustic fusion. “Mississippi Burning” has a groove and almost invisible funky touch. “Heavy Weather” is an elegant ballad, representing the whole album – mature, but paying not too much attention to reality's troubles. “Saving Grace” is exactly what the title says – another ballad with a great melody and positive vibe.
It takes a bit of time for the listener to realize that “Damion” is a drummer's album. From the very surface, it often sounds just like a contemporary piano trio. Maciej Gołyźniak's drums are fluid. He doesn't show up. The music is all about nuances and sounds, first of all for the drummer, but for the rest of the musicians, as well. Maciej uses the drum kit of his choice, paying close attention specifically to how the instruments sound.
“Grand Central” is a true drummer's song; it runs faster, and Maciej has more space to use his techniques here. Still, it stays well-rounded. “Supernova” is another short percussive piano ballad. “Going Home” features a fragile piano and groovy bass, closing a comfortable, elegant album.
Both piano/keys and bass build an excellent musical body for Maciej's graceful percussive arrangements. The name " Damion ", coming from Ancient Greek, can be associated with “to tame the wild powers”. Maciej Gołyźniak's “Damion” illustrates how well he controls the troubles with his own elegant beauty.
