Czas Kobiety

TS LUBLIN/UNIVERSAL MUSIC POLSKA 2017

By Krzysztof Komorek

To dość nietypowe wydawnictwo.

Ten Krótki album to zaledwie 32 minuty muzyki.

Here And Now

PRIVATE EDITION 888295649858

By Adam Baruch

This is the fourth release (second formal album) by Polish (resident in NY) guitarist/composer Paweł Ignatowicz recorded in a quintet setting with relatively young but already established musicians from the NY scene: keyboardist Julian Shore, bassist Edward Perez, Hungarian born drummer Ferenc Nemeth and tabla player Jonathan Singer. The album presents ten compositions, which although not specifically described as such on the album's artwork, are all originals by Ignatowicz.

The music is a nice collection of melodic mainstream tunes, excellently performed by the quintet, as expected from a professional team like this one. Ignatowicz plays acoustic and electric guitars, guitar synthesizer and electric sitar, producing a kaleidoscope of sounds and effects, supported by a straight-ahead rhythm section. The overall result is a nice melodic album, which is fun to listen to, but is also easily forgotten, being simply not ambitious or innovative enough to make a lasting statement.

Although the rhythm section sticks to Jazz forms, the electric guitar sound, which dominates this album, pulls the resulting music towards Fusion and that's how most listeners would probably classify it. The album is sadly typically American, slick and glossy, but with very little contents, which is a pity as Ignatowicz probably is able to produce much more ambitious music than what is presented on this album. Guitar freaks might find this album interesting to some extent, but considering the mammoth amount of guitar albums out there, I wouldn't bet on it.

My Songs

QBK 022

By Adam Baruch

This is the debut album by Polish guitarist/composer Leszek Zaleski, recorded in a quartet setting with pianist Dawid Troczewski, bassist Piotr Sypień and drummer Marek Jakubowski. The album presents ten original compositions, all by Zaleski.

The music is a melodic mainstream Jazz, very clean and straightforward and yet elegant and aesthetically appealing. The melodic themes, which as Zaleski states in his liner notes, were composed over a period of several years, are all solid and coherent, presenting a gifted composer, obviously influenced by contemporary guitar superheroes but stating his own ideas.

The instrumental performances are excellent, as expected, no big surprises but solid professional playing and a lot of joy for guitar fans. Zaleski plays both acoustic and electric guitars and his clean tone and imaginative solos are very pleasing. Troczewski also deserves attention, as his piano work here is every bit as strong as the leader's guitar, beautifully enriching the overall sound. The rhythm section is proficient, but does not step beyond the expected support needed by the soloists, simply doing what is needed in this case.

The recording quality is top notch, which results in a well balanced sound and perfect clarity, which are essential to ensure full enjoyment of the music. The album as a whole should satisfy all guitar loving music connoisseurs, who are not looking for experimentation or groundbreaking excursions, but who love to sit back and enjoy a set of beautifully melodic tunes played exactly the way they should be. I hope to hear more from Zaleski and his team in the future, and in the meantime enjoy this little gem to the max!

Sundogs

FSR 2017/10

By Maciej Krawiec

Krzysztof Komeda – People Meet And Sweet Music Fills The Heart (2017)

Krzysztof Komeda

People Meet And Sweet Music Fills The Heart (Soundtrack)

GAD 060

By Adam Baruch

This is an archival release of the previously unissued soundtrack composed by the Godfather of modern Polish Jazz, Krzysztof Komeda, which accompanied the film with the above title, by Danish director Henning Carlsen, premiered in November of 1967. It was the last cooperation between Komeda and Carlsen, which continued for several years and produced some of the most striking European soundtracks ever to be recorded. The album presents the nineteen short pieces, which were incorporated within the film, as well as five bonus tracks which are outtakes or alternate versions from the recording sessions. The music was recorded in Denmark by a band and a string section, the lineups of which are unknown.

The music is typical Komeda cinematic work, which includes several wonderfully melodic themes and a series of musical fragments needed as background music for the film's scenes. None of these themes "made it" into the classic Komeda standards, which became a part of the rich legacy of Polish Jazz, simply for the reason that this music was never released on record and was not played by Komeda's groups, as he left for the US soon after the film was released. It was the last European film Komeda composed the soundtrack for, followed by a brief, but brilliant Hollywood career, tragically cut short by his death just a year and a half later.

Although not entirely within the Jazz idiom, the music is mostly closely related to Jazz, even on the background pieces, with the Jazz pulse present, with varying degrees of explicitly. The band features flute, saxophone, trumpet and a rhythm section, and on a few tracks also a string section, which of course also emphasizes the Jazzy side of the music. Komeda's modern European Jazz was ideally suited to the European cinema of the mid 1960s, which was also trying to find its own esthetic and artistic quality different from the established American values.

For the many fans of Komeda all over the world this album is an absolutely essential addition to their collection and a wonderful missing piece of the puzzle. Elegantly packed and accompanied by intelligent liner notes, which present the historical background information about this music, this is a true gem. GAD Records make history again!

Ocelot Of Salvation

REQUIEM 148

By Adam Baruch

This is the debut album by young Polish Jazz piano trio called Immortal Onion, which comprises of pianist Tomir Śpiołek, bassist Ziemowit Klimek and drummer Wojciech Warmijak. The album presents eight original compositions, which are not credited on the album's artwork.

The music is quite original and surprising, stylistically resembling the early work by the Progressive Rock legends Emerson, Lake & Palmer, i.e. Classically influenced melodic themes featuring improvisation, odd meters and a basic Rocky attitude, emphasized by the rhythm section (electric bass and energetic drums work). But the music is diverse and offers a very interesting and pleasurable listening experience. Although only marginally Jazz related, this music, like most Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion is also of interest to most Jazz enthusiasts.

Although this album is based on the rich Progressive Rock legacy and other influences, it is not an attempt to copy or repeat these patterns but rather a courageous effort to innovate and develop. As such is deserves praise and attention as well as my worm recommendation to music lovers to seek out this little gem and give it a serious listen. Considering the young age of these musicians, one can only hope for more great music they will hopefully offer us in the future.

Overall this is an excellent debut offer which deserves to be heard. Kudos to the superb Polish label Requiem Records for consistently supporting music, which does not easily fit into established categories and supporting experimentation.

24 Preludes & Improvisations

DECCA 028948164011

By Adam Baruch

This is a monumental solo piano album (2 CDs) by the Polish pianist/composer Piotr Orzechowski (a.k.a. Pianohooligan), which presents twenty four preludes composed by him, each of them followed by an improvisation connected to the prelude; altogether forty eight short pieces of music, sequenced in the order of the chromatic scale from C major to B minor. This is Orzechowski's fourth album for the Classical Decca label, which consistently and faithfully supports his career.

The music beautifully portrays the two faces of Orzechowski's musical personality, rooted on one side in Classical Music ranging between Johann Sebastian Bach and Krzysztof Penderecki and on the opposite side in Jazz and Improvisation. Although perfectly capable to stand on its own, this music is much better understood when seen (or rather heard) in the full scope of Orzechowski's recordings, as presented on the abovementioned Decca albums.

But even for a person completely unaware of Orzechowski's background and recording legacy, it should be immediately apparent that this is a great Artist at work, both as a composer and as a performer. The scope of his imagination, intelligence, musical depth and aesthetic perfection is evident in every one of these forty eight miniatures. Listening to this music is a deep, almost spiritual experience, which should leave no music lover indifferent.

In spite of the seemingly serious and complex exterior of this music it is wondrously accessible to every open-minded listener, way beyond hard core Classical or Jazz listeners. The beauty of this music wins the listener over almost immediately and the fact that these pieces are short and diverse completely excludes any chance of boredom or tiredness. Personally I found this music so fascinating that the entire double album seemed to last but a few short moments to me.

This music is immensely multilayered. It can be experiences on its exterior layer, but it can also be probed into the inner layers, which reveal intricate complexities in both the composed preludes and the improvised pieces. As such this music should require repeated listening sessions to be explored in depth. Overall this is a masterpiece of contemporary Polish music, which proudly represents the incredibly high level of musical creativity and talent, which many young Polish composers and musicians are blessed with. For people unfamiliar with the treasures of Polish Music, this album could be a wonderful window into what is happening in Poland today. Brilliant stuff!

MUZYK ROKU 2017: DOMINIK WANIA

Polski pianista i kompozytor, absolwent Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie oraz wydziału jazzu New England Conservatory of Music w Bostonie (USA). Tomasz Stańko, Piotr Baron, Jacek Kochan, Bronisław Suchanek, Zbigniew Wegehaupt, Marcus Miller, Joey Baron, Anders Jormin, Lee Konitz, David Liebman, George Garzone, Eddie Henderson, Nguyen Le, Gary Thomas, Marilyn Mazur. Jest adiunktem w Katedrze Muzyki Współczesnej, Jazzu i Perkusji w Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie oraz wykładowcą w Instytucie Jazzu Akademii Muzycznej w Katowicach. Laureat wielu nagród. Za swój pierwszy autorski album - Dominik Wania Trio "Ravel"- otrzymał dwa Fryderyki.

DEBIUT ROKU 2017: KASIA PIETRZKO TRIO - FORTHRIGHT STORIES

"Forthright Stories" to debiut młodej pianistki Kasi Pietrzko i jej autorskiego tria, z Corcoranem Holtem na kontrabasie i Piotrem Budniakiem na perkusji. "Album to fragmenty wielu skrajnych emocji, przełomów, momentów życia, palet i barw zaklętych w monochromatycznej, na pozór banalnej estetyce" – wyjaśnia artystka. Kasia Pietrzko jest studentką klasy fortepianu Katedry Jazzu i Muzyki Współczesnej Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie. W 2015 roku, wraz z grupą Stanisław Słowiński Quintet, zdobyła Grand Prix konkursu Jazz Juniors. Współtworzy też The Tony Williams Tribute, którego liderem jest perkusista Michał Miśkiewicz. Współpracowała z Henrykiem Miśkiewiczem, Mateuszem Smoczyńskim, Adamem Bałdychem. Występowała na festiwalach w Hiszpanii, Serbii, Rumunii, Słowacji, Czechach, na Węgrzech i w Chinach.

REEDYCJA/NAGRANIE ARCHIWALNE 2017 ROKU: ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT - SOLO VIOLIN/VARIOSPHERES - LIVE IN SOLOTHURN

Na płycie znalazły się znane kompozycje Seiferta, m.in.: "Man Of The Light", "Way To Oasis", "On The Farm" czy "Turbulent Plover".
