Summa Intuitiva (2021)

Wydawca: AudioCave

Tekst: Maciej Nowotny

Potrzeba cierpliwości, by się dać muzyce otworzyć.

Case Of Surprise

FOR TUNE 0071

By Adam Baruch

This is the second album released on For Tune Records by the Polish Improvised Music ensemble The Intuition Orchestra. On the previous album, entitled "To The Inside", they created a bridge between the origins of their activities by including archival material of early recordings going back as far as 1993, and their (then, 2011) current material. Listeners interested in the genesis of the ensemble (and the fascinating Polish Avant-garde in general) should check out the fabulous Legendarne Ząbki album as well as the Grupa w Składzie album, which are both related to Intuition Orchestra.

On this album the ensemble is down to a trio lineup with saxophonist/clarinetist Ryszard Wojciul, keyboardist/cellist Bolesław Błaszczyk and drummer Jacek Alka. They are joined by three guests: vocalists Marta Grzywacz and Basia Błaszczyk and recorders player Dominik Strycharski. Together they perform twenty one short (averaging around two minutes) collectively improvised pieces. The titles of all the pieces are in fact lines from a poem by Grzywacz.

The music on this album can be treated as a continuous flow from start to finish, since the separation into the individual pieces is pretty arbitrary. It includes a wide variety of sounds produced by the instruments, voices and electronics, all combined into an unusual, bubbling amalgam, which is unpredictable and keeps the listener at his toes at all times.

There is very limited melodic content here, and when present it lasts just for a brief moment, before it is picked up by the improvisers and taken into another dimension. As such, this music is obviously much more difficult and challenging, but of course provides a much stronger emotional as well as intellectual interaction. Avant garde music is not supposed to be measured by its likeability, but rather by its ability to absorb the listener's attention and take him unconditionally on a timeless, completely subconscious journey into sound aesthetics.

To an untrained ear this music can sound chaotic and even cacophonic, and yet it does make perfect "sense" and "intelligibility" to the cognoscenti. The trick is simply to let the flow of the sound engulf you and carry you on. This music seems to be able to serve as a vehicle to reach "higher planes", a rare and precious quality, which should be cherished.

Overall this is superb contemporary music, which still tries to expand the realm of what we consider as being sonic Art. Regardless of the current trend of music imploding into itself, people who are pushing outward at least try to slow the process. This album is warmly recommended to open minded listeners, who have no Avant-garde phobias!

To The Inside (2014)

By Stefan Wood

The Polish group The Intuition Orchestra, is actually a trio, fronted by Ryszard Wojciul, with Boleslaw Błaszczyk and Jacek Alka. Having played in the politically charged underground Polish rock scene in the late 80's, and studying music at the Warsaw Music Academy, Wojciul was exposed to jazz and modern classical, and grew interested in improvised music. When the economy collapsed, he worked for a corporate radio station, and after a decade, returned to playing music, with the emphasis on total improvisation. As a result, no two concerts or albums are alike. On this album, To the Inside, they are accompanied by several musicians, Marcin Olak, Wojciech Szewko, and Jacek Malicki on guitars, Monika Szulińska on percussion, and Maciej Szczyciński on double bass.

The opening track, "Czas Bylo Ruszac," is short but very atmospheric, emphasis on the guitar with a little electronics from Blaszczyk. Delicate but with a flurry of notes, it remindes this listened of early Pink Floyd. The following track, "Transuranowce," has Wojciul playing this sax over a funky percussive Gamelan influenced beat, with a heavy bottom edge provided again by Blaszczyk's electronics. It is an outstanding tune. The group is at their most playful when they let things loose, as in the aforementioned track and in "Zeriba, Zeriba," another wild percussive heavy track, breaking halfway in with a Wojciul solo, then moving back towards a slower but still percussive led beat. An Asian influence is definitely felt, merging with a European stum und drang sensibility; a light exotic flavor tempered by free form unpredictably and drama. "Stolon" is more contemplative, the guitar providing a gentle yet unpredictable solo path, with electronics and a tabla like percussion providing a little tension and spatial flavor. "Transsylwania" is another percussive led track, with piano doing a long solo, sometimes melodic, other times percussive. "Do Wewnatrz," is a guitar led improvised tune with a pseudo flamenco beat. Only occasionally does it feel that the improvising leads to nowhere, as in the anemic "Dziwactwa Zabobon," where there are a lot of things happening -- percussion, sax, electonics, providing a mood, but not leading anywhere, but it is rare.

To the Inside is a strong album of improvisation that harnesses a global range of sounds, fusing them with their Polish sensibilities, and creating a strong work of sonic art. Recommended.

O The Intuition Orchestra:

Historia The Intuition Orchestry sięga pierwszej połowy lat 80. XX wieku. Wówczas koledzy z podstawowej szkoły muzycznej – Ryszard Wojciul, Bolek Błaszczyk i Jacek Alka rozpoczęli eksperymenty z muzyką improwizowaną. W książeczce do najnowszego albumu zespołu To the inside czytamy - „duch naszej muzyki pozostaje niezmienny, choć dotyka różnych obszarów muzycznej estetyki.

Legendarne Zabki – Legendarne Zabki (2011)

Jacek Alka - drums
Boleslaw Blaszczyk - bass. cello
Ryszard Wojciul - saxophone
Robert Wyszynski - piano

REQUIEM 44/2011

By Adam Baruch

This is a fascinating archival glimpse at the music created in the mid-1980s by the Polish ensemble Legendarne Zabki (Legendary Teeth), which was one of the very few acts playing improvised music and creating avant-garde sound collages at the time. The ensemble comprised of saxophonist Ryszard Wojciul, pianist Robert Wyszynski, bassist / cellist Boleslaw Blaszczyk and drummer Jacek Alka. Several other musicians also participate in these recordings, which were made during a two years period, after which the ensemble disbanded. The album includes twenty one tracks, recorded privately by Alka on amateur equipment at various locations.

At the time Legendarne Zabki were active Poland went through the roughest period in its post-WWII history, with the Martial Law imposed upon its population between 1981 and 1983 and a deep economic crisis lasting throughout the decade. Music was one of the escape routes for the young Poles, with the vast majority choosing Rock as their preferential genre, which resulted in the explosion of Rock music in the country. Young musicians, who selected Jazz and Free Jazz in particular, were a tiny minority. Therefore these historic recordings bring to light an almost completely lost chapter of the country's musical history.

The music, presented chronologically, shows a steady development of the ensemble from Free Jazz towards experimental Improvised Music, which also incorporates literary works of philosophy, prose and poetry and avant-garde influences. The importance of such music is mostly in the fact that it was done at all at the time. Listening to it today exposes the lack of experience of the young participants and their detachment from other Improvised Music activities in Poland and abroad. Although the ensemble lasted only a couple of years, these musicians continued to make music together from time to time and are still a part of the Polish Improvised Music scene today.

The album is released in a beautiful unique packaging and is a Limited Edition of 300 copies only. It is a collectors' item and enthusiasts of Polish music should find this an intriguing addition to their collection. Check it out!

The Intuition Orchestra - Free Acoustic (2009)

Free Acoustic (2009)

By Maciej Nowotny

"Fromm" by The Intuition Orchestra featuring Grażyna Auguścik and Zdzisław Piernik belongs to the best releases in 2012. I was fortunate to be able to get hold of first album issued by this ensemble and here is my report.

"Free Acoustic" was released in 2009 and was not available in commercial circulation. Altogether the mere 100 copies were pressed. It is therefore really very, very rare. The line-up is a bit different than on "Fromm" with Ryszard Wojciul (saxophones, clarinet, flute, synths, EWI, vocal) and Bolesław Błaszczyk (synths, piano) appearing on both albums. But Marcin Krzyżanowski (electric cello) and Piotr Gliński (percussions) seem to be present only on "Free Acoustic" but not on "Fromm" (I write "seem" since I do not have physical copy of "Fromm" and got line-up only from the sources available on internet).

There are some affinities in style between these two releases, like strong connections with contemporary classical music,  yet it is better to treat them separately. They bring in fact totally different aural experience. In both cases VERY satisfactory.

The music by The Intuition Orchestra is based on total improvisation. We can read in linear notes: "Musicians meet in studio and without any preparation and without composition create music. The compositional process takes place during recording. And it is result of emotion and sensitivity which is brought to session by its participants".

Sounds OK but in most cases of so called free music (less and less this kind of music has anything in common with jazz) this brings only chaos, cacophony, disorder. Fortunately this is a bit different in case of this album. Sure the music on this album can be characterized by higher degree of entropy than typical mainstream albums. But in fact what we get here is a very coherent material which offers continuous narration from the beginning to the end.

The reason for this is that sounds that were recorded during session were afterwards carefully selected and mixed. The interesting thing is that the same material was mixed TWICE by two different members of the ensemble.  On CD 1 we got music as arranged by Ryszard Wojciul, while on CD 2 by Marcin Krzyżanowski. This is a very interesting idea and its outcome is inspiring. Check one of mixes by Marcin Krzyżanowski which is particularly catching:

The Intuition Orchestra feat. Grazyna Auguscik, Zdzislaw Piernik - Fromm (2012)

The Intuition Orchestra

Ryszard Wojciul – saxophones, bass clarinet, EWI
Bolesław Błaszczyk – piano, double bass, synth
Grażyna Auguścik – vocal;
Zdzisław Piernik – tuba, percussions
Jacek Alka – drums

Fromm (2012)

The moving force behind this project is Ryszard Wojciul. His career is reflecting the history of rapid economic and social changes in Poland in last 20 years. In last days of communism (80ties) he took part in vivid and rebellious Polish rock scene being member of such a significant bands as Róże Europy, Sztywny Pal Azji or Oczy Amelki. At he same time he studied musicology in Music Academy in Warsaw and his interests began to move towards more ambitious forms of music, especially the improvisation. That made him interested as much in jazz as in modern classical music. It also may be seen as fairly typical example of the musical way taken then (90ties) by many young musicians creating so-called yass movement.

In 1989 Poland changed its political system from communist to capitalist which resulted first in a total economic meltdown. The culture lost almost entirely any financial support from the government. Even worse it coincided with a significant impoverishment of people. The result was a serious breakdown of once flourishing areas of Polish culture, be it cinema, literature or music. Most of the talented youths moved their interests from the art to business and Wojciul was one of those many. From 1995 to 2005 for ten years he was working for a big corporation which happened to be radio station but he basically ceased to be active musicician any more. And again, as many of his colleagues in recent years, he quit the job in corporation and returned to some of his artistic activietes.

One of them is The Intuition Orchestra which is a band formed with his long-time companions Bolek Błaszczyk and Jacek Alka. The name of this project says it all: this is a music focused on improvisation where every concert is different from the other. Spontaneity, collective creative process, deep interplay, freedom is all this music is about. Sometimes such a attitude brings chaos and leaves a soul of listener confused. But rarely it allows him or her to transcend a meanness and prosaism of daily life into a redeeming artistic experience and this is the case of this album...

This catharctic experience would be impossible without artistic influence exerted by two guests invited to this project: Zdzisław Piernik and Grażyna Auguścik. Both are legends of Polish music but in a very different way. Piernik who plays on tuba is present on Polish scene for 40 years verging between classical, jazz and avantgarde projects. What distinguish him is a consistent and uncompromising creativity he displays in every project he is involved in. Auguścik is one of top three female jazz singers in Polish jazz with such mainstream albums as recent "The Beatles Nova" (2011). She is also participating is high quality international projects like for example this year in Matt Ulery "By A Little Light" (2012). And it is as much Piernik as her extraodinry free jazz vocalizes which catapult this music to artistic stratosphere! Her light, filigree and spontaneous singing saturates music with emotions and coulours making its rehearsal unforgettable experience. Brilliant stuff!

I would like to thank Rafał Garszczyński for his insightful interview with Ryszard Wojciul which help me a lot in writing this text. You can read it in Polish here: (link).
