Co ma Piernik do zagrania?

Ha! Wywodzić można by bez końca. Doceniali go najwięksi kompozytorzy i dedykowali mu własne dzieła, m.in.

"Sprzedawcy glonów" (1973), wyróżniającej się chociażby doborowym składem (Szukalski, Muniak, Namysłowski, Stańko, Karolak, Makowicz, Bliziński, Trzaskowski, Nahorny, Seifert, Urbaniak, Suchanek, Bartkowiak, Stefański i kilku innych asów).

Dziwna to pozycja, zaskakująca i pasjonująca. Awangarda.

Przyznaję, wyczynia rzeczy niesłychane i bezkompromisowe.

I jeszcze ta oprawa graficzna mizernie opisanej płyty: motywy kolejowe, lokomotywy i torowiska. Zagadka.

***

Zdjąłem ją teraz z półki, by odświeżyć wrażenia.

Avant-Garde Out Of Poland

REQUIEM 178/2018

By Maciej Krawiec

The Intuition Orchestra feat. Grazyna Auguscik, Zdzislaw Piernik - Fromm (2012)

The Intuition Orchestra

Ryszard Wojciul – saxophones, bass clarinet, EWI
Bolesław Błaszczyk – piano, double bass, synth
Grażyna Auguścik – vocal;
Zdzisław Piernik – tuba, percussions
Jacek Alka – drums

Fromm (2012)

The moving force behind this project is Ryszard Wojciul. His career is reflecting the history of rapid economic and social changes in Poland in last 20 years. In last days of communism (80ties) he took part in vivid and rebellious Polish rock scene being member of such a significant bands as Róże Europy, Sztywny Pal Azji or Oczy Amelki. At he same time he studied musicology in Music Academy in Warsaw and his interests began to move towards more ambitious forms of music, especially the improvisation. That made him interested as much in jazz as in modern classical music. It also may be seen as fairly typical example of the musical way taken then (90ties) by many young musicians creating so-called yass movement.

In 1989 Poland changed its political system from communist to capitalist which resulted first in a total economic meltdown. The culture lost almost entirely any financial support from the government. Even worse it coincided with a significant impoverishment of people. The result was a serious breakdown of once flourishing areas of Polish culture, be it cinema, literature or music. Most of the talented youths moved their interests from the art to business and Wojciul was one of those many. From 1995 to 2005 for ten years he was working for a big corporation which happened to be radio station but he basically ceased to be active musicician any more. And again, as many of his colleagues in recent years, he quit the job in corporation and returned to some of his artistic activietes.

One of them is The Intuition Orchestra which is a band formed with his long-time companions Bolek Błaszczyk and Jacek Alka. The name of this project says it all: this is a music focused on improvisation where every concert is different from the other. Spontaneity, collective creative process, deep interplay, freedom is all this music is about. Sometimes such a attitude brings chaos and leaves a soul of listener confused. But rarely it allows him or her to transcend a meanness and prosaism of daily life into a redeeming artistic experience and this is the case of this album...

This catharctic experience would be impossible without artistic influence exerted by two guests invited to this project: Zdzisław Piernik and Grażyna Auguścik. Both are legends of Polish music but in a very different way. Piernik who plays on tuba is present on Polish scene for 40 years verging between classical, jazz and avantgarde projects. What distinguish him is a consistent and uncompromising creativity he displays in every project he is involved in. Auguścik is one of top three female jazz singers in Polish jazz with such mainstream albums as recent "The Beatles Nova" (2011). She is also participating is high quality international projects like for example this year in Matt Ulery "By A Little Light" (2012). And it is as much Piernik as her extraodinry free jazz vocalizes which catapult this music to artistic stratosphere! Her light, filigree and spontaneous singing saturates music with emotions and coulours making its rehearsal unforgettable experience. Brilliant stuff!

I would like to thank Rafał Garszczyński for his insightful interview with Ryszard Wojciul which help me a lot in writing this text. You can read it in Polish here: (link).

Namanga (2008)

Let us be frank: Polish artists, including musicians, are rather conservative persons. Few among them are really creative. Few dare to be mad, crazy, twisted. Yet great music usually needs some of those features to happen. That's why it is relatively so rare and consequently so precious. Going back to Polish music, especially jazz, few such personalities ever existed in this country. Who comes to my mind? Stańko, first of all, is among those gifted as much musically as spiritually. Few others indeed, to greater or lesser extent, like Tomasz Szukalski or Andrzej Przybielski. Many more in so called yass movement including Tymon Tymański, Jerzy Mazzoll, Jacek Olter or Mikołaj Trzaska to name just a few. Zdzisław Piernik should be included among them although he stands alone as part of no movement. He was always dedicated to improvisation in music. Uncomproming in this attitude he has become legendary over the years inspiring new generation of musicians to take alternative route in jazz, the route towards spontaineity, towards freedom. Looking from these perspective two of recent recordings by Zdzisław Piernik with very young muscians are interesting to us:

"Energa One" is duo where Piernik as usual plays on tube while young Górczyński on saxophone, flute and clarinet. Everything here is pure improvisation. No melody keeps direction of this music. It is therefore no wonder that an outcome of such an adventure is mixed. Sometimes it is pure chaos which I find difficult to digest (even for my rather free jazz inclined ears!) but there are moments, especially in second part of this album, that compensate for such a pain with beautiful music indeed. It is a pity that whole album is not at this level! All in all, this is definetely fresh yet at moments too incoherent music. (By Maciej Nowotny, http://kochamjazz.blox.pl)

As for "Nemanga" please ready this text by Danny (http://killedincars.blogspot.com):
"(...) Polish jazz does it again. The entanglements that build the line-up of this album are rather complicated. Apparently, it's Zdzisław Piernik that's the leader of the group and the tuba player. Apparently, he's conducting/leading/performing Piotr Zabrodzki's music. But, apparently, Piotr Zabrodzki is also in the group, playing piano, electric piano, doublebass, bass guitar and organ. There are a few other players around, with instruments ranging from vibraphone to violin. Anyway, the tuba is definitely the highlight here, as it is processed, digressed and distressed into sounds that some times evoke Prokofiev's mysticism, other times throw you into a melange of Krzysztof Komeda and Mikołaj Trzaska, suggest what Supersilent would sound like if they were actually good, or remind us of last year's excellent EAQuartett. Oh, if we've mentioned that one - yes, it has a plus compared to it, a big plus: way more creativity. A minus? The production is not as good.(...) For fans of: "We don't know if this is jazz, classical music, electroacousic improvisation or a chamber music rehearsal."

S.P.P.T. Chalturnik – Chalturnik (Polish Jazz Extended, Vol. 95, 1974)

S.P.P.T. Chalturnik (band)

Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski - tenor saxophone, "mouth synthesizer", leader
Zbigniew Namyslowski - alto saxophone
Janusz Muniak - tenor saxophone
Tomasz Szukalski - bass clarinet, clarinet, tenor saxophone
Zdzislaw Piernik - tuba
Jan Jarczyk - piano, trombone
Tomasz Ochalski - piano (tracks 2, 10 only)
Bronislaw Suchanek - bass
Jerzy Bezucha - drums

Chalturnik (1974)
This wonderful album is the debut recording by the S.P.P.T. Chalturnik ensemble, invented, founded and led by saxophonist / composer / bandleader Jan "Ptaszyn" Wroblewski. As the title suggest, the idea behind this ensemble is all about humor in Jazz, a relatively rare attitude in modern Jazz but something quite common in traditional Jazz. The ensemble consisted of the crème de la crème of the Polish Jazz scene: saxophonists Zbigniew Namyslowski, Janusz Muniak and Tomasz Szukalski, tuba player Zdzislaw Piernik, pianist Jan Jarczyk (replaced by Tomasz Ochalski on two tracks), bassist Bronislaw Suchanek and drummer Jerzy Bezucha, with the leader playing saxophone and a "mouth synthesizer" (i.e. a comb) and contributing four of his original compositions. The rest of the music comes from various sources, including even one theme by Tomasz Stanko (obviously a tongue in cheek towards modern Jazz). Although the humorous approach to the music is easily detected, the perfect performances and the wonderful arrangements turn this album a true gem. These great musicians prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that sometimes it pays to take a slightly relaxed approach to music. Great stuff!
