Jazz ponownie zabrzmi nad Odrą

Po symbolicznej edycji w 2020 roku Jazz nad Odrą powraca w pełnej krasie. Pięć dni koncertów na trzech scenach, gwiazdy polskiego i światowego jazzu oraz tradycyjne jam session do rana – Strefa Kultury Wrocław odkrywa pierwsze karty tegorocznego programu.

Na ten moment czekali wszyscy fani wrocławskiego festiwalu – poznaliśmy pierwszych artystów, którzy we wrześniu wystąpią nad Odrą, ale także nowe miejsca tegorocznych koncertów. Scenę główną przeniesiono do Teatru Polskiego, na drugą lokalizację organizatorzy wybrali scenę w podwórku Impartu. W trakcie festiwalu zobaczymy tam m.in. Brytyjczyków z GoGo Penguin, grupy okrzykniętej „Radiohead brytyjskiego jazzu” oraz wrocławski kwartet Błoto z ich brzmieniem mocno osadzonym na brutalnych hip-hopowych fundamentach. „Piotr Wojtasik Presents” – pod takim szyldem wrocławski trębacz zaprezentuje nowy projekt, do którego zaprosił – swoim zdaniem – najbardziej wartościowych i inspirujących muzyków różnych generacji. Na scenie pojawią się m.in. Viktor Tóth, Bartosz Pernal, Darek Oleszkiewicz, Leszek Możdżer, Emose Uhunmwangho, Magdalena Zawartko oraz Anna Maria Mbayo.

Do Wrocławia przyjedzie także Nubya Garcia, wielokrotnie nagradzana saksofonistka i kompozytorka, która w 2020 roku wydała swój debiutancki album „Source” inspirowany hip-hopem, dubstepem, soulem i calypso. Wraz ze swoim debiutem dla wytwórni Blue Note pojawi się także Gerald Clayton – pianista zagra utwory oryginalnie zarejestrowane na, nominowaną do nagrody Grammy, płytę „Happening: Live at the Village Vanguard". W programie znajdziemy także występ Joe Lovano, giganta saksofonu tenorowego, który zaprezentuje się w odsłonie Trio Tapestry wraz z pianistką Marylin Crispell oraz perkusistą Carmenem Castaldim. Nie zabraknie emocjonujących przesłuchań finałowych w konkursie na Indywidualność Jazzową 2021, które zakończy uroczysta gala wręczenia nagród. Nad Odrę powrócą również laureaci poprzednich edycji konkursu – zobaczymy wspólny występ składu Marcin Pater Trio (Grand Prix 2020) z Leszkiem Możdżerem oraz koncert Kuba Banaszek Quartet (Grand Prix 2019). Nie jest to koniec festiwalowych ogłoszeń – nową tradycją wydarzenia jest bezpłatna scena na placu przed Impartem, która cieszy się wielką popularnością. Tam dla amatorów szerokopojetego jazzu – szczególnie tego pod chmurką – przygotowano równie bogaty program koncertów, który organizatorzy ujawnią w kolejnych tygodniach. Na najwytrwalszych czeka także jam session w klubie festiwalowym ulokowanym w Imparcie. Tegoroczna 57. edycja Jazzu nad Odrą potrwa od 15 do 19 września.

This is the debut album as a leader (as far as I know) by Polish Jazz trombonist/composer Bartosz Pernal recorded in a pianoless sextet setting with trumpeter Dominik Gawroński, saxophonists Wojciech Lichtański and Marek Konarski, bassist Jakub Olejnik and drummer Grzegorz Pałka. The album presents six original compositions, including the title track three part suite, all by Pernal. The album was recorded at the excellent Monochrom Studio and was engineered by Ignacy Gruszecki, offering a wonderful sound quality, as expected.

The music is typical modern Jazz, based on melodic compositions and skillfully arranged for the Brass dominated sextet, which has a very unique sound due to lack of harmonic support. The extended pieces offer plenty of opportunity for all the participants to solo at length and the first-rate rhythm section keeps the music moving forward on secure ground. Despite their relative young age all the members of the band are seasoned and experienced instrumentalists, as evident by their performances herein. The outstanding drumming by Palka is an absolute highlight and definitely worthy of special attention.

The album is not trying to be flashy or dazzling, but it offers solid, well developed musical ideas, superbly performed and coherently put together, which turns it into a most enjoyable and rewarding listening experience, worth returning to, especially for enthusiasts of Brass sections and multi-part expanded Jazz compositions.

Overall this is a great piece of music, perhaps more in the "musician's musician" mold, as it offers many tricks of the Jazz trade on different levels, starting with the compositions and then almost orchestral arrangements, the delicate balance between the instruments and crowned by the wonderful execution. Definitely well done!

Like several other young Polish Jazz ensembles before them, the quintet co-led by trombonist Bartosz Pernal and pianist Michał Szkil won the international Jazz Festival Competition at Getxo, Spain, and as a result their concert was released by a local record label, which is also their debut album. In addition to Pernal and Szkil the quintet also includes trumpeter Maurycy Wójciński, bassist Michał Kapczuk and drummer Grzegorz Masłowski. The live recording presents five tunes, three of which are original compositions by Pernal, one is a John Coltrane composition and the remaining one is a Kenny Wheeler piece.

As usual in such cases it is quite amazing to witness the level of musicianship and skill presented by these young musicians. Obviously well schooled and full of individual talent they create energetic and highly sophisticated modern mainstream. The original compositions are all top notch and their treatment of the standards is unusual and very sensitive. Of course the live recording reveals also minor glitches committed in the heat of the process, but those are completely insignificant in the overall view of things. The quintet has a somewhat unusual sound with the trombone/trumpet front, which adds to its attraction.

As far as the individual performances are concerned, the two co-leaders present the highest level of technical skill and inventiveness. Szkil is particularly worth following as his piano magic will surely find a large following sooner or later. The trumpeter is full of bravado and imagination, but he keeps missing a note here and there, which is noticeable. The rhythm section is excellent and adds a significant layer to the overall sound and presentation.

Overall here comes another group of young Polish Jazz lions, which will create the next generation of the local Jazz scene in the years to come. Considering how great they are already, the future definitely looks bright!
