Hat, Rabbit (2009)

'Hat, rabbit' went gold the year it was released (2009), it was also nominated for Best Alternative Album (at the Polish record industry awards - Fryderyki), garnered high critical praise, and won over a great number of fans, beginning a new chapter for Gaba. 

Most notably, it was her first departure from solo-piano sound - 'Hat, rabbit' is most of all a band record (recorded with her longtime stage allies, Raalya), and a live-band energy permeates almost every song. And while it has its share of mysterious, dark ballads, the over-the-top-cabaret-rock prevails. Think 'Queen', and you won't be far from the mark! 

This time, we've included an extra track - 'Devil's Headlights', which was recorded for the album but dropped shortly before release (mostly because we wanted to keep the album a certain length, and partly because it didn't fit in). And now here it is!

Kucz/Kulka is a project of three artists. Intriguing and unique Gaba Kulka, one of the most talented and talked about young Polish singers who accepted an invitation two years ago by Konrad Kucz to join the project he has been working on. Konrad is composer, producer and the master of ambient. They were working on the Album for several months, putting the pieces together, when the project was joined by Bogdan Kndracki (one of the most popular producers in Poland) who added the final flavorse and put the finishing touches to it.

Album Kucz/Kulka Sleepwalk is 40 minutes of music difficult to categorize in any way. It is one of the most interesting albums created in the past several years, unque and very special as it stands at the crossing where niche/alternative meets pop.

The Saintbox (2012)

The Saintbox sprung to life in 2010, when Olo Walicki, composer and double bass player, invited Maciek Szupica (visuals), an Gaba Kulka (voice, lyrics, several small instruments) to cooperate on the project: holding on to a loose outline of themes such as spirituality and ritual, they created new material, and premiered it during the Jazz Jantar Festival in Gdansk (November 2010). The Saintbox was born as a multimedia spectacle in which the visual is as vital as the sound. The debut was very well received: “The Saintbox is groundbreaking and surprising. From the beginning it was obvious the concert will be nothing like the rest of them.” “Submerged in folk, and improvised music on equal part, Olo Walicki’s pieces sound every bit as mysterious and intricate, as their sacral inspiration would suggest. When combined with Szupica’s pictures, they create a true musical ritual.“

Inspite of Olo’s yass background, the feel and structure of Saintbox’s music is rather like an eerie, dearmlike movie soundtrack. It points to classical music, experiments in electric jazz of the seventies, rock and folk (with echoes of Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin and Sufjan Stevens). At times it’s dark and unsettling, often lyrical, sometimes humorous. The lyrics (in English, French, German and latin) written or interpreted by Gaba add a curious Babel tower in the midst of the music.

Aside from the live performances (including those at Leszek Mozdzer’s Enter Festical in June 2011, and the Zubroffka short film festival in Bialystok) – the band has devoted most of the past year to recording the album – with guests including Macio Moretti, and the Gdansk Philharmonic Brass. The album has been produced and mixed by Marcin Bors, who has, among other works, produced Gaba’s “Hat, Rabbit” album.

In 1984, Iron Maiden brought a massive stage show through Eastern Europe, performing in five different Polish cities. The love Eddie and the gang showed for the other side of the Iron Curtain comes back here, with Baaba Kulka’s off-the-wall tribute to the metal giants. Polish electro-jazz-rock band Baaba provides the background music, lurching between Klezmer, gypsy-rock, and even something that sounds like lounge music from the future. Singer Gaba Kulka unleashes big, jazzy singing overtop, belting the hell out of fan favorites you’ve never heard like this before. The set brings out the cartoonish fun that always lurked not too deep within Iron Maiden songs, but without an ounce of irony or condescension. It’s a boisterous celebration by a collective that may not have a metal bone in its body, but invite big grins while you sing (and dance) along with the wildest crossover album this side of Warsaw.

Chopin Shuffle (2010)

Levity is Jacek Kita (keyboards), Piotr Domagalski (basses) and Jerzy Rogiewicz (drums). They started playing together in 2005, when Kita and Rogiewicz met during their composition studies at Academy of Music in Krakow. Their debut, self titled album released in 2009 by buoyant label Lado ABC was exploring the boundaries of improvisation within the schemes of classical jazz song form. All pieces written by Levity, ranged from ethereal „scandinavian” sounding lyricism to complex, polytonal broken beats played with punk energy. 

Their second, double album „Chopin Shuffle” (Universal 2010) presented the band extending their sound with synthesisers, electric basses, effects, samples and top notch production. It is also a concept album with all the pieces based on Frederic Chopin’s cycle of 24 preludes op.28. A special guest on „Chopin Shuffle” is Toshinori Kondo – legendary Japanese avantgarde trumpet player. Moreover the album features Gabriela Kulka (vocals), Grzegorz Uzdanski (poetry), Raphael Roginski (guitar) and Tomasz Duda (baritone sax).

„On Chopin Shuffle a weel trained ear may hear politexturalism of John Zorn, Jamie Saft’s serenity, rhythmic combinations of Autechre and Aphex Twin, naivity of polish cartoons from the sixties, hardcore noise, gentleness of a good song. And Chopin? Not too much, but that’s the strenght of Levity – they made Chopin’s preludes they own pieces. „Shuffle” is the most adventurous up to date attempt of creative use of Chopins music.”
